How I Work.
What is Psychotherapy and what should you expect? The terms 'Psychotherapy' and 'Counselling' are generally interchangeable but there is a difference. The process of counselling is usually considered to be short term therapy and can often be used in crisis or short term agreements. Psychotherapy on the other hand is therapy that delves into those deeper issues with a view to uncovering the reasons for recurring problems and difficulties. Both counsellors and psychotherapists require qualifications, but pyschotherapists are trained to degree level and hold membership to a professional body- IACP, IAHIP, APCP etc.
Just as there are a myriad of issues that people can face, there can be a myriad of different reactions to those same issues. People are unique, and experience things differently, so I believe that therapy has to be tailored to the person. Some of the questions I encourage my clients to ask themselves and be curious about are, "Why am I the way I am?" and "How am I experienced by others?". The aim of both is to help the person to understand themselves better, with the end goal of overcoming and healing those difficult life events, toxic thoughts and challenging feelings.
Through my own personal therapeutic journey I have learned the importance of relationship. It is that person to person human connection, that helps to enhance healing, and this is what I aim to offer above all the theory and maps.
My approach is to do an initial assessment, and work in collaboration with the person, moving towards a unified goal. I believe that just as we are holistic beings we must tend to ourselves in a holistic way. Hence, in therapy I look at, not only the psychological issues that present, but also at diet, lifestyle and the self care tool kit you are currently working with. Above all it is my belief that it is a privilege to journey with the client, and ultimately I believe that it is the client who always holds the key.
